Dit kwam door een ondoordringbare Moerasgebied, De Peel. Van dit ooit 30.000 ha grote hoogveengebied is nog 4500 ha over als natuurreservaat.<\/strong><\/h5><h5><strong>Het 1400 ha grote peelgebied bij Helenaveen, Griensveen, IJsselstein en Deurne wordt aangeduid met Mariapeel en Deurnese Peel.\u00a0 Daarnaast ligt er <\/strong><strong>ten noorden van de spoorlijn Helmond-Venlo <\/strong><strong>nog een klein Peelrestantje het Grauwveen.<\/strong><br \/><br \/><strong>Het meeste veen is verdwenen door turfwinning. Eerst kleinschalig door boeren, later fabrieksmatig door familie van de Griendt en de gemeente Deurne. De kleinschalige turfwinning is nog terug te zien aan de\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Boerenkuil\">boerenkuilen<\/a>\u00a0langs\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/w\/index.php?title=Peelbaan&amp;action=edit&amp;redlink=1\">Peelbanen<\/a>. Dit zijn de wegen om turf per kar af te voeren. Familie van de Griendt en de gemeente Deurne hebben hun turf afgevoerd via kanalen (wijken). Ook deze zijn nog duidelijk zichtbaar in het landschap.<\/strong><br \/><br \/><\/h5><h5><strong>Door deskundig beheer is op diverse plaatsen de hoogveenvorming weer op gang gekomen. Dat vraagt veel beheerswerk. Het gebied moet nat blijven zonder dat er voedselrijk water binnen dringt. Daarnaast is het noodzakelijk om wildopslag van m.n. berken tegen te gaan. Dit doet men voor een deel met begrazers en voor een deel met machines.<\/strong><\/h5><h5><strong>Het huidige landschap kenmerkt zich door een rijke afwisseling van onder andere droge- en vochtige heideterreinen, moerasachtige gedeelten, open- en gesloten bossen, veenputten, wijken, vennen en open water.<\/strong><br \/><strong>Het gebied is rijk aan vogels en insecten. <br \/>Pijpenstrootje en Heide zijn de meest dominerende plantensoorten.<\/strong><\/h5>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section
