Het is eigendom van Stichting Het Limburgs Landschap. <\/strong><br \/><br \/><strong>Midden in het gebied ligt een ven. Dit heet \u201cDe Venkoelen\u201d. Het ven wordt omgeven door bossen en grasveldjes. De Venkoelen was ooit een verveende maasarm. Deze is in de 19<sup>e<\/sup> eeuw afgegraven. In 2001 is de plas uitgebaggerd. Nu is de plas vooral bekend vanwege de\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paddentrek\">paddentrek<\/a>. Om deze te beschermen brengen vrijwilligers in het voorjaar vangsystemen aan en de wegen in het gebied worden &#8216;s nachts afgesloten. <\/strong><br \/><br \/><strong>Naast veen is er in het verleden ook klei afgegraven. Mede hierdoor komen er, op een relatief klein gebied, veel bodemtypes voor. Dit verklaart het naast elkaar voorkomen van vochtige- en droge bostypen, grasland en kleine heide-restanten. <\/strong><br \/><strong>Een bijzonder bostype, nog herkenbaar aan de boomsoorten die er staan, is het zogenaamde stadsbos. Na de Tweede Wereldoorlog werd dit ingericht als park met een grote afwisseling van boomsoorten.<\/strong><br \/><br \/><strong>De graslanden vormen een mooie overgang naar het Vreewater ten oosten van Velden.
