Het is een Natura 2000-gebied met een hoge Europese beschermingsstatus.<\/strong><\/h5><h5><strong>Ruim 600 ha is eigendom van Stichting Het Limburgs Landschap. De rest is particulier bezit.<\/strong><\/h5><h5><strong>Ooit was het onderdeel van een uitgestrekt moerasgebied omgeven door heide en moeras.<\/strong><\/h5><h5><strong>Nu kom je er droge bossen, vochtige bossen, vennen, vochtige graslanden en heidevelden tegen. De bodem bestaat uit leemarm- en lemig dekzand. Lokaal komt nog veenontwikkeling voor.<\/strong><\/h5><h5>\u00a0<\/h5><h5><strong>Het gebied maakt deel uit van een groter reservaat met in de naaste omgeving gebieden als Ringselven, Kruispeel, Hugterheide, Weerterbergen, Budelerbergen. Maarheezerveld,\u00a0 Somerense heide,\u00a0\u00a0Strabrechtse Heide, Maarheezerveld en Budelerbergen.<\/strong><\/h5><h5><strong>Van oudsher was het een nat gebied. Door ontginningen in de 19e en 20e eeuw zijn delen van het gebied ontwaterd en in cultuur gebracht.<\/strong><\/h5><h5><strong>Het gebied wordt nog steeds afgewaterd door het beekje de\u00a0Oude Graaf. Om de verdroging tegen te gaan zijn sinds de jaren 90 van de twintigste eeuw de waterlopen aangepast en vennen uitgebaggerd.<\/strong><\/h5><h5><strong>Voorbeelden van bijzonder vlinders zijn\u00a0 Kleine ijsvogelvlinder,\u00a0Grote weerschijnvlinder\u00a0en het\u00a0Spiegeldikkopje.<\/strong><\/h5><h5><strong>Sinds 2005 lopen er, in een afgebakend gebied, 20 edelherten. Deze zijn vanuit een uitkijktoren te observeren.<\/strong><\/h5><h5><strong>In de plassen komt oeverkruid\u00a0en\u00a0veenmos voor.<\/strong><\/h5><h5><strong>Tegen de provinciegrens met Noord-Brabant ligt de\u00a0grenskerk: een openluchtkerk en tevens monument uit de 17e eeuw.\u00a0<\/strong><\/h5>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section
