Het kanaal is ongeveer 10 km lang.<\/strong><\/h5><h5><strong>Tot de dertiger jaren werd het kanaal vooral gebruikt voor het afvoeren van turf vanuit de Peel tot aan de Napoleonsweg in Neer. Daarnaast is het kanaal gebruik voor het afvoeren van mijnhout uit de nabij gelegen bosgebieden. Het laatste stukje was te ondiep voor de trekschepen. Nu heeft het enkel nog een afwateringsfunctie. Het stroomgebied grens afwisselend aan agrarisch gebieden en bosgebieden. Langs het kanaal loopt een, voor doorgaand snelverkeer afgesloten fietspad. Dit geeft het gebied een extra recreatieve waarde.<br \/><\/strong><br \/><strong>Op diverse plaatsen is het kanaal dichtgeslibd. Hierdoor gaan de oevers op een natuurlijker manier over in het omliggende landschap en krijgen moerasplanten als dotterbloem en waterlelie de kans om zich rijkelijk te ontwikkelen.<br \/><\/strong><br \/><strong>In het kanaal bevinden zich nog twee karakteristieke overblijfselen van sluizen. De muren hiervan zijn begroeid met rotsplanten. Samen met de verbouwde sluiswoningen herinneren deze sluizen aan de periode van scheepvaart. Langs het kanaal komen een aantal dassenburchten voor. <br \/><br \/>Foto\u2019s van de sluis aan de Neerseweg worden vaak gebruikt voor het uitbeelden van een typisch stukje
